BreyerStone-Firefin by tyreenya BreyerStone-Firefin by tyreenya
In the depths of the oceans of the Indo-Pacific, one of the most feared of all hippocampus lionfish live. Firefin, as he's called by most, is one of the most brutal and ruthless hippocampus around. He guards his reefs, using his fins that sting like fire to ward off intruders.

Tricked Out Pony entry for 2007. The Tricked Out Pony Contest is for model horse customizers. Each year a Stone Model (Used to be Breyer) is chosen to use for the contest. Each person gets the same model, and they can do whatever they want to it, as long as they retain at least 50% of the original model.

This is beautiful! Love the idea :)
Was wondering, in the process of customising a breyer I got with badly broken legs and decided that now I could justify removing limbs to make a hippocampus which I've wanted to do for a while. Having lots of problems with the polyclay I'm using though, doesn't sand well (tends to crumble a bit or if only used in fine layers, flakes) and having issues with using it for spines and fins. I saw you said you used apoxy sculpt- does this attach well to breyer models or does it need glue?

Thank you, Misty! You have -gorgeous- creations yourself! This particular one is a combination of all sorts of things, but the main thing I use to sculpt with is called Apoxie Sculpt, which is a 2-part apoxie-clay. It's very durable, but can get pricey. It's worth it though!

The Tricked out pony contest link, unfortunately, was taken down by the lady who ran it (Sheryl Leisure). I'm not sure why, probably because she quit running the contest (sad!). There were so many neat entries! You may be able to do a google image search for some of them though.

Thank you for that information. I've heard a lot about the Apoxie Sculpt,is there a certain time line to work in while using it? Your piece is so perfect, I'd love to try "tricking out a pony" just to see if I could do it. I went to that sight and as you said ...it was no longer there. Some where in a search I found the entry , The Hippogriff, which was stunning also.
I love these horses, I have boxes full, my folks bought me one for Christmas and birthdays every year, back when they were 3.99 they've gone up since then!
Have a great evening and thank you again for answering so candidly!

I love the idea of a lionfish hippocampus. The markings and fins are perfect and I love how you added the bit of detailing to the back edges of his jawbone. Beautiful sculpture.
